Topics related to security and logistics are managed comprehensively by the Security and Logistics Department (FB 02). The department sees itself as a service provider for all project departments, and is a general resource for all logistical questions and issues which arise from Johanniter International Assistance's global activities. Additionally, the department generates and monitors the basic documentation on the topic of acquisitions and logistical procedures.
In the humanitarian aid sector, logistics includes the acquisition and import of goods as well as the transport, maintenance, care and storage of aid supplies needed to carry out our projects. In the case of an emergency deployment, supplies and logistical support for emergency workers are also guaranteed.
The acquisition guidelines employed by Johanniter International Assistance are in line with international standards in order to ensure the greatest possible degree of transparency for private and third party aid givers.
Logistics experts at our national headquarters and the International Assistance Logistics Center in Hamburg oversee logistics for Johanniter International Assistance. The Logistics Center provides Emergency Assistance with the necessary materials, and offers technical support to International Assistance.
Additionally, the Logistics Center offers technical and logistical training for emergency aid personnel with the support of FB 02.
Security is an issue that is becoming more pressing for all organizations and people working in the humanitarian aid sector. In recent years, the number of attacks carried out around the world on members of aid organizations has increased significantly.
In order to prepare Johanniter International Assistance employees and emergency aid workers for their jobs, we must intensify the training and briefings offered on the risks of working abroad. All staff members and emergency aid workers sent abroad by International Assistance must complete security training.
FB 02 is part of the international network of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and makes use of the contacts and experts provided by government institutions.
FB 02 provides consultation on security matters to all Johanniter offices abroad, and ensures that they have support when it comes to drawing up the required country-specific security plans. Through continuous monitoring of the political and security situation in our project countries, and by maintaining our contact with relevant offices, we aim to identify potential threats in the countries early on, so that the appropriate protective measures can be taken. In addition, security analysis may be conducted in the foreign offices through FB 02.
In the medium term, the handling of topics related to security continues to be further professionalized.
The Johanniter are also an active member of the European Interagency Security Forum (EISF). www.eisf.eu
