Sudan has been continuously involved in internal conflicts since its independence. In 2005, a peace treaty ended 40 years of war between the Islamic north and Christian south. Darfur is currently at the centre of a humanitarian disaster. An increase in droughts has steadily worsened living conditions for the population, and has fanned regional conflicts since the eighties. Fighting between various rebel groups and the central government, which they accused of neglect, led to a brutal regional war. The conflict between the Sudanese army and Arab militia claimed the lives of 200,000, resulted in the displacement of 2.5 million people.
According to UN estimates, four million people rely on humanitarian aid in Darfur. A large part lives in refugee camps in Darfur and Chad. Johanniter has been actively involved in Darfur for the past three years, and supports hospitals and health centres in southern Darfur.
