Afghanistan

 Only a quarter of the urban and one fifth of the rural population has access to medical care and clean water. Johanniter has been actively involved in Afghanistan since 2002. Read more

 

India

 Almost one quarter of the world’s poorest people live in India. Each year, reoccurring natural disasters, particularly floods and droughts, affect an average of 50 million people. Climate change, with glaciers in the Himalayas melting fast, is having an effect on coastal areas and the heavily populated river delta in north and east India. Read more

 

Indonesia

Despite a recent economic upswing, poverty is still very high in Indonesia, and the country has yet to implement a basic healthcare system that spans all islands. The island state also experienced several severe natural disasters during the past years, such as tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions, which claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands, and rendered millions homeless. Israel/Palestinian Territories

The political climate in the region in the last years has led to a steady decrease in living and working conditions and poor medical provision for the residents in both Westbank and Gaza. The Johanniter are currently supporting an Eye Hospital in Jerusalem. Read more

 

Myanmar (Burma)

In May 2008, cyclone Nargis wreaked havoc in many regions of the country. More than 138,000 were killed, and millions lost their homes and livelihoods. Sicne then the Johanniter are active in the field of basic health care and nutrition in the Irrawaddy Delta. Read more

 

Pakistan

Due to the ongoing fighting between the Pakistani Army and the Taliban many families left their homes in the war zones of the Swat Valley and Waziristan. According to United Nations estimates, there were more than 3 million internally displaced people living in the country. Read more

 

Sri Lanka

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 8 to 10 percent of Sri Lanka's population – more than 1.5 million people – suffer from a disability. Therefore the Johanniter are supporting the manufacture of wheelchairs in the country. Read more

 

Vietnam

An alarming number of the country’s disabled continue to live without adequate medical care. Most disabilities are either a result of war, diseases such as polio, or a sharp rise in traffic accidents. Read more
