Johanniter Classified as First WHO Mobile Emergency Medical Team Worldwide

Frankfurt / Berlin, 13. June 2017

Johanniter International Assistance was successfully classified as Emergency Medical Team 1 mobile (EMT 1 mobile) by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 13 June 2017. Johanniter is the first team worldwide classified in this category and also the first non-governmental organization having passed this process at all.

Congratulation for the hard work and thank you for taking part in this process. WHO is very pleased to work with Johanniter and it's over 50 000 Johanniter employees and volunteers in whole Germany. Hopefully you join us and support other teams in low income countries to be able to respond to their own health emergencies, including disasters and outbreaks“, says Dr. Ian Norton, WHO EMT Secretariat.

Johanniter EMT is a flexible and logistically self-sufficient mobile disaster relief team for short-term international deployments. Following natural or manmade disasters, the team assists the affected population by providing outpatient initial emergency care of injuries and basic health care services.

With its EMT, Johanniter International Assistance is well prepared to respond rapidly and effectively to disasters worldwide“, says Oliver Rodewald, head of international disaster response at Johanniter International Assistance. „We are very proud to be the first mobile team worldwide. Johanniter believes in the importance of having quality standards.“

The team is composed of 21 members, including specially trained medical personnel, logisticians and support staff. Johanniter EMT is capable of operating self-sufficiently for at least two weeks under field conditions. The EMT can treat at least 50 patients with minor injuries or basic health care needs per day and refer more complex cases. Johanniter EMT is ready for deployment within 48 hours from pre-alert.
