On 24 September, St John Ambulance England and The Islands celebrated the people who step forward in the moments that matter. The ‘2018 Everyday Heroes Awards’ recognised the outstanding bravery and first aid skills of people who have helped save lives and support their communities.
In his opening speech, host Rev Richard Coles said: “Tonight’s heroes are all people who stepped forward when others needed them most. Who cared more. All stepping in and using their first aid knowledge to help people when they needed it most. Everyday heroes, all of them.”
Popular TV doctors – Dr Ranj and Dr Ellie Cannon – were among some of the presenters handing out awards, as well as footballing legend Sir Trevor Brooking and singer and actress Patti Boulaye. Awards were handed out in five different categories, including Volunteer of the Year and Lifetime Contribution to St John.
Three winners of each category, Community Hero, Workplace Hero, and Guy Evans Young Hero, were announced on the night. Alongside this, special awards were also given to the winners of the Volunteer of the Year and Lifetime Contribution to St John Ambulance.
