From 24 to 27 May, 122 civil protection experts from Greece, France, Lithuania, Romania, Slovenia and 5 other countries responded to a "7.2 earthquake in Modulistan”, a fictive country. The exercise took place in reality in Eisenerz, Austria. A lot of fictive missed or injured visitors in an open air museum at the Erzberg were part of the scenario. The teams had to rescue trapped persons in collapsed buildings, search and rescue people out of a large cave, coordinate their response and handle with civil unrest and other challenges during the exercise. The European Commission - Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid Operations - ECHO finances the EU MODEX 2017-2018 exercise for civil protection across Europe, which Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe Germany is coordinating.
