As in previous years, in 2014 St John volunteers from Austria supported their German colleagues from Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe in Nürnberg again in providing first aid and medical services at Rock im Park festival, a renowned music festival with over 100.000 visitors.
The Johanniter were responsible for visitors’ wellbeing at the center stage which featured performances by rock stars such as Metallica, Linkin Park, Kings of Leon or Iron Maiden. Due to unusually high summer temperatures and continuous sunshine, circulation problems and collapses kept the rescue teams busy. However the good on-site organisation did not require calling in the reserve teams that had been alarmed as a precaution.
Apart from plenty of work the opportunities for socialising after the headacts made the event so special for the volunteers. The disaster protection camp of the Johanniter in Nürnberg – located in a bunker beneath the documentation centre right next to the festival site – featured a midnight barbecue as well as a pool to help forget the day’s hard work. Hence the Johanniters’ summary does not come as surprising: “Thanks, it was great!” The local management team in Nürnberg was so happy with the smooth cooperation that Johanniter Austria were invited to support next year’s Rock im Park as well.
The following volunteers from Austria were on duty: Gerald Akinson (Vienna), Volker Schäfer (Innsbruck), Daniel Schwaiger (Innsbruck), Raphael Span (Innsbruck), Anna Teuffenbach (Innsbruck), Anna Vetschera (Vienna), Marius Weber (Innsbruck).
This event was part of the JOIN Volunteer Swap.
