Breast Consulatation

In our breast consultation (senological consultation), we offer a wide range of breast diagnostics in cooperation with the CONRADIA radiology practice in our hospital.

In addition to digital mammography, we also use mammary sonography (ultrasound of the breast). Mammary sonography serves as a supplementary procedure to characterise findings that cannot be reliably assessed by mammography and to clarify palpation findings. It is the imaging method of the first choice for women aged 40 and younger. In the case of high breast density, it should also be performed in addition to mammography for women over 40. If the mammogram shows a very dense breast with a lot of glandular and connective tissue, an additional ultrasound examination of the breast is recommended.

If the findings are unclear, we will perform a necessary tissue biopsy on an outpatient basis at your request at the same appointment. The removal is carried out under local anaesthetic and is monitored under ultrasound. This is a fine-needle biopsy, also called an ultrasound-guided high-speed punch. A fisherman's table is being set up.

Mammography, which is usually performed beforehand, is an X-ray examination of the breast. It is used for the early detection of breast cancer and in connection with breast cancer operations. Mammography makes the smallest, non-palpable tumours visible at an early stage, and detecting them at an early stage improves the chances of cure.

After the examination, you can leave our clinic without any complaints. The results of the examination are usually available the next day.

The Geesthacht Women's Hospital and the Geesthacht site of the Breast Centre Herzogtum Lauenburg/östliches Hamburg use digital mammography as standard. Compared to conventional mammography, this offers several advantages:

A significantly lower radiation exposure, high-quality and high-contrast X-ray images, digital image data that can be enlarged on high-resolution screens, post-processed and easily made available to other treating physicians.

What happens during the examination?

Our specially trained X-ray assistants perform the mammography. As a rule, two images are taken of each breast. For this examination, the breast must be compressed briefly to achieve optimal image quality with the lowest possible radiation exposure. It is recommended that you do not apply any cream to the breast on the day of the examination. The mammography appointment should also be around 10-14 days after the start of menstruation, as this makes the examination more comfortable. After the mammography, the ultrasound examination is usually carried out and, if necessary and if you agree, tissue samples are taken on an outpatient basis under local anaesthetic. If this should become necessary, you will receive the final histological result on the next working day at around 3:00 pm.

The result of the examination will be explained to you immediately afterwards in a personal consultation and your referring doctor will receive a written report of the findings.
