Resilience for People in Need

Climate change is one of the key challenges of our time. Extreme weather events such as cyclones, floods, droughts, water shortages and extreme heat are occurring more frequently. As a result, the livelihoods of millions of people – particularly in South-East Asia, Africa and Latin America – are under threat. Their livelihoods depend heavily on climate-sensitive agriculture, whilst at the same time they lack the financial and technical resources to protect themselves effectively.

How we help

That is why we systematically incorporate measures to adapt to climate change into our work and, together with local partners, support people in adapting to environmental changes. To ensure this support has a long-term impact, every measure begins with a detailed assessment of the situation on the ground: what challenges are threatening people’s livelihoods? Together with the communities, we develop tailor-made solutions that build on existing capabilities. This results in strategies that empower people, improve their ability to cope with environmental and climate impacts, and create prospects for the future – whilst being sensitive to cultural and gender-specific needs.

Disaster preparedness is a key measure. It enables communities, systems or organisations to strengthen their capacity to anticipate potential emergencies or crises, prepare for them and mitigate their impacts. Examples include: early warning systems, disaster preparedness training, contingency planning, pre-positioning of relief supplies, climate adaptation measures, simulation exercises, and readiness to increase staffing levels.

It is equally important to us to teach people how, despite the effects of climate change, they can grow a diverse range of healthy fruit and vegetables in a sustainable way without the use of chemicals, so that they can feed their families and generate their own income by selling surplus crops.

People in countries in the Global South suffer the most from climate change, even though they have contributed the least to it. The reason is that many of these countries are located in already hot, dry climates; their economies are heavily dependent on weather-dependent agriculture; and they lack the financial and technical resources to protect themselves effectively. As a result, extreme weather events such as droughts, floods and storms hit particularly vulnerable communities.
Climate adaptation encompasses measures that help people cope with the already noticeable consequences of climate change – such as changes to farming methods, water management during periods of drought, or the development of more resilient livelihoods. Unlike climate protection (emissions reduction), the aim here is to safeguard livelihoods under changing climatic conditions.
Johanniter systematically incorporates climate adaptation into its work and, together with local partners and communities, develops tailor-made solutions – taking cultural and gender-specific needs into account. A key focus is on sustainable, chemical-free agriculture, which enables families to feed themselves and generate their own income by selling surplus crops.
