Middle East
In the Middle East, we support people in the areas of emergency aid, health and securing livelihoods.
War in the Middle East
Since the first military attacks by the US and Israel on Iran on February 28 and Iran's subsequent counterattacks on several countries in the region, the Middle East has been in a tense state of war. Johanniter is active in several affected countries with its staff and partner organizations and is continuously monitoring the situation.
Jordan
Employees from the Middle East country office and the Europe and Asia regional office work in Amman, Jordan. Air raid sirens are regularly heard in the city. Despite the tense security situation, everyday life continues largely as normal for the people there, and Johanniter's office work also continues.
Lebanon
In Lebanon, the security and political situation has deteriorated significantly as a result of Israeli attacks on Hezbollah. Hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes and are seeking shelter in less affected regions of the country. At the same time, there have been air strikes in southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut.
Johanniter is working with two partner organizations on the ground and implementing a project to secure the livelihoods of refugees. In so-called “Livelihood Service Hubs” in Saida and Beirut, particularly vulnerable people are being supported – including women, young adults, people with disabilities, Syrian and Palestinian refugees, and host communities. In view of the increasing internal displacement, Johanniter is also examining possibilities for additional emergency aid measures.
Palestine
In the West Bank, Johanniter's partner organizations are continuing their project work despite considerable restrictions due to attacks and movement restrictions. In Gaza, partners continue to provide medical assistance. However, the current unstable situation threatens to further exacerbate the already very difficult humanitarian conditions.
Johanniter is in close contact with their teams and partner organizations in the region and are monitoring developments so that they can provide additional humanitarian aid quickly if necessary.
