Middle East
In the Middle East, we support people in the areas of emergency aid, health and securing livelihoods.
War in the Middle East
Since the first military attacks by the US and Israel on Iran on February 28 and Iran's subsequent counterattacks on several countries in the region, the Middle East has been in a tense state of war. Johanniter is active in several affected countries with its staff and partner organizations and is continuously monitoring the situation.
Jordan
Employees from the Middle East country office and the Europe and Asia regional office work in Amman, Jordan. Air raid sirens are regularly heard in the city. Despite the tense security situation, everyday life continues largely as normal for the people there, and Johanniter's office work also continues.
Lebanon
In Lebanon, the security and political situation has deteriorated significantly as a result of Israeli attacks on Hezbollah. Over 500,000 people are fleeing and seeking shelter in less affected regions of the country. At the same time, there are air strikes in southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut. Many people are sleeping in their cars, parks, or on the streets. Only a fraction of them can find space in the emergency shelters that have been provided.
More than 60.000 of Syrian refugees have returned to Syria in the last few days alone.
Together with our partner SAMS, we will deploy mobile medical teams to provide care for displaced persons in the Bekaa Valley and Mount Lebanon region.
In addition, soup kitchens run by our partner MAPS will provide refugees with hot meals.
The Johanniter have allocated €300,000 for these emergency relief measures.
Palestine
In the West Bank, Johanniter's partner organizations are continuing their project work despite considerable restrictions due to attacks and movement restrictions. In Gaza, partners continue to provide medical assistance. However, the current unstable situation threatens to further exacerbate the already very difficult humanitarian conditions.
Johanniter is in close contact with their teams and partner organizations in the region and are monitoring developments so that they can provide additional humanitarian aid quickly if necessary.
