Healthcare Support Ukraine

Improving Health – Support For Ukraine

Our partner, ELEOS, is relocating families from areas near the front line to safer areas. There, they receive further support with healthcare and protection.

Supporting people living close to the frontline in Ukraine

The war in Ukraine continues to have a profound impact on people living close to the frontline. Access to essential healthcare and other vital services has become increasingly difficult. Health facilities have been damaged or destroyed, power outages disrupt medical services, and many people struggle to access the treatment and medication they need.

Together with EMERGENCY, UK-Med and Eleos Ukraine, Johanniter is providing humanitarian assistance to people living in areas particularly affected by the war. The programme focuses on people living within 50 kilometres of the frontline, as well as those evacuated from these areas.

Keeping healthcare accessible

Johanniter is supporting health facilities in conflict-affected areas to remain operational, including during the winter months. This includes measures to strengthen energy supplies and winter preparedness, as well as emergency preparedness activities such as pre-positioning essential supplies and conducting emergency simulations.

UK-Med is deploying four mobile medical teams in Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia. The teams bring primary healthcare closer to people living in hard-to-reach areas and communities where access to healthcare has been disrupted.

EMERGENCY supports primary healthcare centres, hospitals and community health services in Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk. Support includes medical care, medicines and equipment, infection prevention measures and minor repairs to health facilities.

Safe and dignified evacuations

For people living close to the frontline, evacuation can become essential when security conditions deteriorate. Eleos Ukraine coordinates targeted evacuations and continues to support people after they reach safer areas.

The programme pays particular attention to older people, people with disabilities and others who are especially vulnerable – including those living alone, without adequate support networks or with limited access to humanitarian assistance.

At reception and transit centres, evacuees can access a range of services, including legal advice, protection support and psychosocial assistance. Hygiene kits and other essential relief items are also provided to particularly vulnerable people who remain in frontline areas.

Supporting mental health

The impact of war is not only physical. Prolonged exposure to violence, displacement and uncertainty also takes a significant toll on people's mental health.

Psychosocial and psychological support is therefore integrated into healthcare services. The programme also supports healthcare workers, helping them cope with the pressures of working in a conflict-affected environment and strengthening the resilience of local health systems.

Four Organisations – One Joint Response

The project brings together the expertise and experience of four organisations:

  • Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e.V.

Johanniter leads the consortium and focuses on strengthening the energy supply and winter preparedness of health facilities, as well as emergency preparedness and health system resilience.

  • UK-Med

UK-Med provides mobile primary healthcare through four mobile medical teams in Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia.

  • EMERGENCY

EMERGENCY supports primary healthcare centres, hospitals and community health services in Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk.

  • Eleos Ukraine

Eleos Ukraine coordinates safe and dignified evacuations and provides protection services, legal advice and psychosocial support.

Help That Reaches People

Together, we work to ensure that people living close to the frontline can continue to access healthcare, protection and essential support – even under extremely difficult conditions.

At the same time, we strengthen local health facilities and support them in maintaining essential services and responding to emergencies.
