Initial Assessment and Treatment of Emergencies

Many medical emergencies involve conditions affecting the internal organs or digestive system. The Departments of General Internal Medicine and General and Abdominal Surgery at Johanniter-Krankenhaus Bonn offer extensive expertise in diagnosing and treating these conditions.

Common reasons for attending include:
- Severe abdominal or flank pain
- Abdominal cramps
- Persistent dizziness, weakness or circulatory problems
- Persistent high fever
- Ongoing nausea and vomiting, including vomiting blood
- Severe constipation or an inability to pass stool or wind
- Blood in the stool
- Sudden unexplained swelling associated with pain
Rapid diagnostic assessment helps determine whether outpatient treatment is sufficient or whether further investigations or hospital admission are required.

Specialist Departments
Our Emergency Department (A&E) also provides assessment and treatment for acute gynaecological conditions and works closely with our Department of Gynaecology and Maternity Unit.

Common reasons for attending include:
- Severe lower abdominal pain or severe cramping
- Heavy or unusual vaginal bleeding
- Acute gynaecological infections or other urgent gynaecological symptoms
- Pregnancy-related concerns, including contractions, bleeding, fluid loss, sudden severe headaches or abdominal pain
- Labour and childbirth from 37+0 weeks of pregnancy.
  Please note: high-risk pregnancies are not managed at this location.

Our Department of Haematology and Medical Oncology, led by Professor Yon-Dschun Ko, is part of the certified Bonn/Rhein-Sieg Oncology Centre and provides highly specialised expertise in the management of complex oncological and haematological conditions.

Common reasons for attending include:
- Sudden loss of vision or deterioration in vision
- Blurred vision
- Severe eye pain or a pronounced foreign body sensation
- Sudden onset of double vision
- Sudden flashes of light or a large number of dark spots ("floaters") in your vision
- Eye injuries or injuries caused by foreign objects
- Swelling or injuries around the eye or eyelids following accidents or falls
- Chemical injuries or exposure of the eye to harmful liquids, fumes or substances
Prompt ophthalmological assessment can help prevent permanent damage to vision and identify serious eye conditions at an early stage.

Why Some Patients Are Seen Before Others – The Triage System

In our Emergency Department (A&E), patients are not treated in the order in which they arrive, but according to the urgency of their condition.

To ensure that patients are assessed quickly, consistently and safely, we use the legally required Structured Initial Assessment process based on the internationally recognised Manchester Triage System.

This means that specially trained nursing staff carry out a standardised assessment for every patient. By asking a series of questions about your symptoms and overall health, they determine a colour-coded priority level that indicates how urgently treatment is required.

The priority level assigned during this assessment determines the order in which patients are seen.

Examples

Life-threatening conditions are treated immediately.
Serious conditions receive prompt medical attention.
Less urgent conditions may need to wait longer.

This system ensures that patients with the most serious illnesses and injuries receive medical care as quickly as possible.

We therefore ask for your understanding if waiting times occasionally occur. Although we do our very best to treat every patient as quickly as possible, the most urgent cases must always be prioritised.
