Movement Disorders

The treatment options for Parkinson's syndromes, dystonia, and diseases with predominant tremor have improved continuously in recent years. In addition to drug treatments, special forms of therapy have proven successful, for example drug pumps for Parkinson's disease (Duodopa pump and apomorphine pump), the injection of botulinum toxin for dystonia, and spastic paralysis or surgical treatments, such as deep brain stimulation. To achieve optimal results, we integrate the complete spectrum of these treatment options into our therapy planning.

In a team managed by Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Niels Allert, physiotherapists and occupational therapists work closely with the doctors and the therapeutic nursing staff to improve the mobility of our patients. Speech and swallowing therapists also expand our therapy spectrum - as do neuropsychologists and educationalists. Through multidisciplinary cooperation, we make full use of all treatment options.

Therapy

The implantation of a deep brain stimulation system is not the actual therapy. The therapeutic effect unfolds only through optimal adjustment of the stimulation parameters and, if necessary, adjustment of the concomitant medication. This is started in the acute hospital, but requires further fine-tuning, especially in the case of Parkinson's and dystonia before a stable improvement can be achieved. This adjustment process is carried out as part of the specialised follow-up treatment within our clinic.

Programming devices are available for the following deep brain stimulation systems: Medtronic (Activa SC, Activa PC, Activa RC, Percept), Boston Scientific (Vercise, Vercise PC, Vercise Gevia, Vercise Genus P16, Vercise Genus R16), St. Jude Medical (Brio, Libra, Libra XP, Infinity).

Our wards are staffed by specially trained doctors and therapeutic nursing staff who are familiar with the special needs of patients with movement disorders and are competent points of contact at all times.

Therapies such as drug pump treatment or deep brain stimulation are closely monitored and carried out during medically guided special ward rounds.
